Gnadenhutten, Ohio is a small village located in Tuscarawas County. It has a rich history dating back to the 18th century when it was established by Moravian missionaries. The village is known for its picturesque scenery, historic sites, and strong sense of community.
The Moravian missionaries arrived in the area in 1772 and established the village as a mission to the Delaware Indians. The village was named Gnadenhutten, which means “huts of grace” in German. The missionaries built a church, school, and homes for themselves and the Delaware Indians. The village thrived for several years until 1782 when a brutal massacre occurred during the American Revolutionary War. In March of that year, a group of American militia attacked the village, accusing the Delaware Indians of supporting the British. Despite the Moravian missionaries’ efforts to maintain peace, the militia killed nearly 100 men, women, and children in the village. This tragic event is remembered as the Gnadenhutten Massacre and is commemorated with a memorial at the site of the massacre.
